• The Dachshund’s paws are unusually large and paddle-shaped, for extreme digging. One Doxie was known to have dug a 33 foot hole in order to reach its unsuspecting prey.
• Burrowers by nature, they like to bury themselves in blankets and other things around the house, especially when tired or bored.
• Dachshunds come in three sizes – standard, miniature and kaninchen, which is German for “rabbit”. The kaninchin can weigh as little as 8 pounds. However, this size is not recognized by clubs in the United States or England, although it is recognized by the World Canine federation.
• The AKC describes the breed as “clever, lively and courageous to the point of rashness”. Their temperament and body language give the impression that they do not know or care about their relatively small size.
